Biography
Dr. Tanmay has always been a curious mind and has immense love for teaching and mentoring. This curiosity to discover the unknown realm in the world around us combined with his enthusiasm for teaching drove him to pursue a career in academia. His schooling has all throughout been in Guwahati. Where he finished junior college from the prestigious Cotton College/University in Guwahati in 2007. Next, Dr. Tanmay joined National Institute of Technology Durgapur (NITD) and completed his bachelors in Electrical Engineering in the year 2011 in 1st Class with distinction. This tenure saw him foray in different fields of research including in speech recognition, autonomous robots and state-of-the-art acoustic sensors. Thereafter, he went on to work for Indian Oil Corporation Limited (a fortune 200 company) for 3 years until 2014. During these years he got to experience and closely work in a world-class industrial organization. However, he soon realized that his true calling remained in research and academia. Therefore, in 2014 he joined the National University of Singapore (NUS) as a Ph.D. student.
His Ph.D. work was mainly focused on advanced non-volatile data/information storage technologies in the Spin and Energy Lab at NUS. Under the supervision of Prof. Hyunsoo Yang and Prof. Charanjit Singh Bhatia he delved deep into the world of information storage and computing, including in hard disk drives (HDDs), magnetic random access memory (MRAM) technologies etc. Dr. M.S.M. Saifullah, IMRE (co-supervisor) and Assoc. Prof. S.N. Piramanayagam, NTU (mentor) were also very instrumental in building his expertise in nanotechnology, specifically in material characterization and lithography processes.
During his Ph.D. he assisted in teaching modules like - basic electrical engineering, engineering principles and practices, circuits and systems etc. in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, NUS. In fact, he liked the experience so much that after his Ph.D. he took up a full time teaching assignment for two continuous semesters at ECE, NUS as a 'Teaching Assistant'. During this assignment, he got experienced firsthand in designing courses for undergraduate students in 'Basic Electrical Engineering', 'Circuits and Systems', and 'Computer Architecture' etc.. He not only delivered lectures and organized laboratory sessions but also designed the course material. This experience at NUS helped in further reinforcing his conviction of pursuing a career in academia- research and teaching.
In the year 2019, he joined the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa) as a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Research Fellow, where he was awarded the prestigious grant by the European Union Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions program to work on Ferrimagnetic Skyrmionic devices for race-track memory technologies. He is now an Assistant Professor in the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department at Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, where he joined in the year 2022.
He is associated with many academic and professional societies including IEEE and IEEE magnetic society. He is also an alumni of the Falling Walls Lab, Berlin, where he was also recognized as a winner and emerging talent.

Dr. Tanmay has almost a decade of experience in developing thin-film and nanotechnology solutions for future data storage (memory) and computing/ processing, energy and biomedical applications.
His work has focused on technologies such as: -
● Spintronics devices- spin based electronics and study of magnetic interactions
● Hard disk drives (HDD): Heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR), bit patterned media (BPM), ex-change coupled composite media (ECC).
● Magnetic random access memory (MRAM): Spin transfer torque (STT) and Spin orbit torque (SOT) devices, magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJ).
● Race-track memory: Domain wall based and skyrmion based.
● Development of functional magnetic nanoparticles for biomedical applications.
● Study of dielectric materials for passivated contacts in photovoltaic (PV) technology.
